The most important area of application is thin-film technology, in which indium tin oxide (ITO) is used for the conductive coating of surfaces. These can be found on many everyday objects such as smartphones, monitors, notebooks and televisions. Indium is also an indispensable material in photovoltaics and is increasingly being used in the production of CIGS thin-film solar modules. In combination with gallium and zinc, indium becomes the semiconductor material IGZO (indium-gallium-zinc-oxide), which is used as a thin-film transistor in OLED flat screens, among other things. The metal is also used to produce high-purity low-temperature alloys and solders for mercury-free thermometers or for the dental and jewelry industry, among other things.
